Designed for intensive care providers with patients in respiratory and cardiac failure, this course will be led by experts from high-volume extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers and consists of a mix of virtual interactive lectures, in-person interactive discussions, and live hands-on high-fidelity workshops. The course follows the experiential learning model which uses a flipped classroom methodology combined with online presentations, and relevant articles to enhance knowledge gain and retention. In this hybrid course, learners will apply the knowledge acquired from pre-course materials when they participate in the hands-on workshops and small group discussions. Topics include:

  • Patient selection
  • ICU management of the patient
  • Basic troubleshooting of the ECMO circuit
  • Venovenous (VV) ECMO for severe respiratory failure
  • Veno-arterial (VA) ECMO for refractory cardiac failure
  • Introduction to maintaining new ECMO programs
  • Skills to identify, initiate, manage, and liberate patients from ECMO for severe respiratory and cardiac failure
  • Cannulation for VV- and VA-ECMO
  • How to recognize and manage right ventricular (RV) failure
  • Management strategies for complications like bleeding, infections, and neurologic problems
  • Approaches for handling ethical challenges presented with patients on ECMO
  • Identification and management of emergencies for patients on ECMO
