Abdominal ultrasonography is a key component for assessment of the critically ill patient. This module will review the important elements of abdominal ultrasonography relevant to the intensivist as defined by the ACCP/SRLF Statement, using a combination of pre-course reading, video image correlation, and case-based demonstrations.
  • Use appropriate equipment and scanning techniques for best quality abdominal ultrasound.
  • Identify, localize, and characterize ascites
  • Identify a safe site for performance of paracentesis.
  • Use ultrasonography to examine kidneys, bladder, and aorta.
