This is a field trial of an e-learning course that offers the critical care clinician a comprehensive review of critical care ultrasonography as defined by the ACCP/SRLF Statement on Competence in Critical Care Ultrasonography (Chest. 2009;135:1050-1060). The entire course covers the following components of critical care ultrasonography:

Module 1: Image acquisition and machine control

Module 2: Thoracic ultrasonography (lung)

Module 3: Thoracic ultrasonography (pleural)

Module 4: Abdominal ultrasonography

Module 5: Critical care echocardiography

Module 6: Vascular ultrasonography (vascular access and venous thrombosis)

For the purpose of the field trial, only modules 4-6 will be included.

The course provides instruction in the cognitive aspects of critical care ultrasonography, image acquisition, and image interpretation using a blended format of didactic material; video-based case review, and real-time demonstration scanning. The emphasis is on developing competence in the clinical applications of critical care ultrasonography using case-based learning.

  • Identify ultrasonography physics, machine controls, transducer manipulations, and ultrasonography artifacts that are necessary to obtain high-quality images.
  • Develop technical and cognitive skills required to achieve competency in lung, pleural, vascular, abdominal, and cardiac critical care ultrasonography.
  • Apply key techniques of ultrasonography that are important for diagnosis and management of the critically ill patient.
