Course Description
*While it is not required to complete the First 5 Minutes ®: Strategies for Building Patient Trust before completing this course, it is recommended.
The First 5 Minutes® (F5M): Compassionate COPD Care mini-series equips health care professionals with essential communication strategies to enhance patient-centered care during key stages of COPD management. Learners will practice using the same evidence-based skills presented in the F5M: Fundamentals modules through three interactive modules focused on diagnosis, treatment planning, and control of COPD. This course emphasizes the importance of building rapport, attending to patient comfort, opening the conversation, eliciting concerns, and applying the PEARLS framework (Partnership, Emotion, Apology, Respect, Legitimization, Support) to build trust and foster better health outcomes and collaborative care for patients with COPD. Reflective journaling throughout the course allows learners to translate these skills into their daily practice, reinforcing compassionate communication at every stage of COPD care.
Course Objectives
Interaction 1
Opening the Conversation With a Patient With New Diagnosed COPD
Reflect on implicit biases, ensuring a patient-centered diagnosis process.
Use open-ended questions to explore the patient's feelings and story.
Listen attentively and mostly silently during patient conversations to create space for the patient to fully express their feelings and concerns.
Interaction 2
Crafting the Care Path: Patient-Centered Conversations in COPD Treatment
Articulate the clinical goals of COPD treatment while restating and incorporating the patient’s personal priorities to ensure a patient-centered approach to care.
Ensure patient comfort by addressing physical, emotional, and informational needs during treatment discussions, leading to a more supportive and effective care experience.
Elicit all patient concerns using the “What else?” approach regarding treatment options, ensuring compliance will be more likely.
Negotiate the treatment agenda with the patient, ensuring shared decision-making in both the plan's approach and implementation.
Interaction 3
Managing COPD Together: Communication for Control and Exacerbation Prevention
Initiate conversations with small talk to build rapport and create a comfortable environment, setting the stage for more effective and open discussions about health concerns.
Use PEARLS to respond with empathy, acknowledging the patient’s emotions and validating their experiences, to build trust and support during discussions of COPD management.
Negotiate a personalized action plan with the patient, ensuring that the plan aligns with the patient’s needs, preferences, and lifestyle while addressing the prevention of future exacerbations.
