CHEST’s First 5 Minutes®: Patient-Centered Approaches in Critical Care course provides clinicians with practical, trust-building communication tools designed to strengthen patient-clinician rapport and support equitable, patient-centered care in critical care environments. The course will introduce strategies for recognizing how social drivers of health influence patient outcomes and how to effectively align goals of care with patient concerns in fast-paced clinical settings. Participants will reflect on personal, patient, and inter-professional biases and practice techniques that foster trust during moments of heightened acuity. The course will also highlight approaches for delivering culturally responsive care that honors patients’ diverse identities and lived experiences, as well as nonstigmatizing practices that can be applied consistently across critical care scenarios.
  1. Recognize the impact of social determinants of health on patient outcomes.
  2. Determine key components of establishing and aligning goals of care with patient concerns.

  3. Reflect and identify personal, patient, and inter-professional biases (eg, cultural and implicit biases, microaggressions, stereotypes).

  4. Demonstrate patient-centered communication techniques that support trust and engagement.

  5. Deliver culturally responsive care that acknowledges, respects, and integrates patients’ diverse identities and lived experiences.

  6. Apply nonstigmatizing approaches in clinical practice.
